Steven Mann

Steve Mann has been co-consulting with DCS Agronomic Services for over a decade. He is an Articling Agrologist & I.S.A. Board Certified Master Arborist with extensive experience evaluating the health, safety, and environmental signifi cance of individual trees and stands of trees in both urban and rural settings. Steve specializes in large-scale tree inventory, evaluation, management, research, and impact studies. He has managed hundreds of projects related to the identification of important natural features and the significance and/or sensitivity of these features to development. He has developed numerous master plans, arboricultural management plans and replanting plans for golf courses, parks and municipal properties. Steve’s more than twenty years of industry involvement has enabled him to interact with numerous provincial and municipal officials on matters regarding tree conservation and large-scale planning applications. He has provided education and training across Canada on arboriculture and green site evaluations and taught a course on Soils for Horticulture at Humber College.

Session Summary

A review of 3 decades in experiences in assisting golf courses across Ontario in the best tree management opportunities. The last 30 years have brought massive change in the way trees can be best managed on golf course properties. Experiences starting in the late 90's with a technology-based push towards improved shade studies on greens, battling invasive pests in the early 2000's, the first municipal tree bylaws in 2005, & a province wide ice storm in in 2013/14 shapes the most sustainable management recommendations made today for trees on golf courses. Focus on this presentation will be the most common tree management problems, some failures in executed tasks, & examples of practical solutions moving forward for you Golf Course.
