Soil Surfactants and Wetting Agents: Helping soil overcome its fear of water

Date, Time & Location TBA

Session Summary

Soils surfactants and wetting agents are now widely used on golf courses to address localized dry spot (LDS), and new technologies continue to enter the market. Their effect on surface moisture extends beyond LDS management, affecting disease pressure, irrigation strategies, and thatch conditions. Improved water infiltration should influence irrigation frequency and impacting insect activity and moss presence. This presentation will provide an overview of soil hydrophobicity and explain the modes of action of various surfactants, including factors that affect their persistence in the soil profile. It will also highlight current and historical research at the Guelph Turfgrass Institute that is informing best practices for wetting agent use in northern climates.
